The Need for a Community Rabbi – According to the Megilla

We live in a generation that is different from those that preceded it. It used to be that one turned to the local rabbi, the mara de-atra, to render halakhic decisions. There were no Ashkenazim and Sephardim, rather, every place followed the rulings of the local rabbi. One advantage of having a mara de-atra is that he is familiar with the questioner, his needs, and the specific impetus for his question. Based on his awareness and understanding, he will be able to grasp the question precisely, gauge the questioner's mental and financial situation, and decide whether to rule according to the mainstream understanding of the law or whether to go beyond the letter of the law. Here at Barkai, we were taught by Rabbi Yosef Eitan (one of the senior rabbis at the Puah Institute), citing Rabbi Min-Hahar, that a "good" rabbi is one who gives two different answers when two different people ask him the same question. The reason for this is that every question has a tremendous amount of background and context, beyond the question itself.

Part of our studies here at Barkai is to sharpen rabbis' sense for investigating and recognizing the context and the reality of the questioner and the question. This sensibility is applicable within the community, where the rabbi is intimately familiar with his congregants, but it also applies when he does not know the questioner, when the rabbi must ask, clarify, put out feelers, and intuit who the questioner is and what the context of the question is. Through these studies, we can, with God's help, respond to our questioners in accordance with the halakha and help them with their physical and spiritual wellbeing. There is no comparison between a rabbi who knows his community and one who does not.

This principle appears at the end of Megillat Esther, which states: "For Mordecai the Jew was second in command to King Achashverosh, great amongst the Jews, and accepted by the masses of his brothers, seeking the good of his people and speaking peace to all their descendants." "Of his people" refers to those alive in his time. For them, he "sought the good", he was active on their behalf. However, when it came to the descendants of his people, those who had not yet been born, Mordechai "spoke peace", that is, he talked but was not truly active. The difference is that for his generation whose people, passions, and needs Mordechai knew, he could work actively. He could only help their descendants a little bit, however, speaking on their behalf, because he did not know them.

As the nation continues to grow and diversify, it is not enough to have a "chief rabbi" – it is necessary to have communal rabbis who know each and every community member. It is crucial for each rabbi to develop the tools that will help him impact his community. This is the activity of Barkai.

Barkai engages in important activities. Its classes meet weekly and give rabbis important experience and numerous tools that enhance how they influence and aid their communities. Rabbis who already serve in communities and who also participate in Barkai attest that already now, when not even half a year has elapsed since the program began, their ability to give to the community has already improved. I also feel that by the end of the program we will have acquired experience and a professional toolbox to rival that of senior rabbis.

This is all to the credit of the esteemed Rabbis Shlomo Sobol and David Fine, who put their all into this program. It is also to the credit of all who contribute their time and money. To all of you we say – thank you!
