Thoughts of a community rabbi on the Shabbat before elections
By Rabbi Shlomo Sobol of Kehillat Shaarei Yonah Menachem, Modiin

Elections are coming up... everyone is speaking about it... there are numerous debates and sometimes even agreement – before, after, and sometimes even during davening...
What about the rabbi? Should he stand at the pulpit and give a sermon about something in the parsha? Like every week, the sermon should be relevant to the lives of the audience and to all Israel, but this time the crowd is mainly interested in the elections. So should the rabbi speak about them or not?
The first inclination is to speak about it. This is the burning issue right now. The community is most interested in it and wants to know what the rabbi thinks. This could be one of those sermons where nobody falls asleep...
On second thought, maybe it is not worthwhile to speak about the elections. It is not "politically correct." The audience is made up of men and women who are very different, with differing opinions. Certainly, whatever the rabbi says will be opposed right away (in truth, that happens every Shabbat... ). So why should the rabbi allow himself to be labeled as part of a specific group within the community, pushing himself further away from another group?
More generally, the rabbi must be above politics. He should not sully himself with them.
Yet, in the final analysis, the rabbi cannot and should not want to ignore the issue of the day. The community is waiting – and rightfully so – to hear the rabbi's thoughts on the issue.
The rabbi is not merely one who renders halakhic decisions; the rabbi is a leader, and a leader must address the issues that preoccupy his community. If we consider Tanakh and, indeed, all of history, we will find that religious leadership often engaged in political leadership, with an understanding that God is revealed not only in the lives of individuals, but also (in fact, primarily) in public life.
Of course, the rabbi need not stand at the pulpit and instruct his community to vote for a specific political party. Not only would that not go over well, but it would also be inappropriate and even phony. The rabbi should, however, emphasize the civic, moral, and religious duty to vote (a subject too broad for this blog post).
Furthermore, the rabbi should address the factors that go into one's decision as a voter. The rabbi must inspire is community to reach their decisions based on which person or party would advance the first flowering of our redemption and strengthen the sacred triad of the people of Israel, the Torah, and the land of Israel.
In sum, I believe that the best practice is to begin by presenting the dilemma of whether or not to speak about the subject, to explain why he ultimately decided to speak about it, and then to actually speak about the topic.
